Reducing the Impact of Your Pre-treatment Processes.

In these times of increased awareness of the environmental impact of running a pre-treatment process it is encouraging to see that there are products available that reduce the energy used and remove the heavy metals employed in a lot of the traditional pre-treatment processes.
In the UK it has long been the case that heavy metal ions such as chromium, zinc and nickel, commonly found in pre-treatment processes, have been strictly controlled in effluent outflows; in many areas water boards have restricted these ions to a maximum of 2ppm or less making it mandatory to have an efficient and well controlled effluent treatment plant in line with most high performance treatment process lines. These plants are expensive to install and run and have to be constantly monitored. The most recent restrictions on cleaning and pre-treatment processes limit the amount of phosphate that can go down the drain. This is a potential problem for the alkaline cleaners used that often employ complex phosphates in their formulations and also the phosphate treatments that follow.
Many pre-treatment suppliers have risen to the challenge and developed products and processes that do not contain these ions and still give very good paint adhesion and corrosion resistance.
Henkel, in particular have developed a range of products that contain no proscribed heavy metals and little or no phosphate in their formulations that can successfully treat ferrous, zinc, aluminium and even magnesium substrates.
Not only do these products contain no proscribed heavy metals and little or no phosphates they also treat the substrates at much reduced or ambient temperatures giving energy savings and a lower carbon footprint.
Some of these processes can also be used with only a very light rinse or no rinse at all saving water and effluent.
Most of these products can be installed in existing pre-treatment plants to update their processes.
What processes and products are available, how are they used and what are their benefits:

Bonderite NT1:
•Alternative to zinc or iron phosphate which provides good paint adhesion and corrosion prevention.
•Can be used in multi-metal applications treating steel, zinc and aluminium substrates with the same operational parameters.
•Dip or spray application at room temperature.
•Typically a 5 stage process with only the alkali cleaner heated.
•Simple process control.
•Simple effluent treatment (no phosphate or proscribed heavy metals present).
•No scale formation in the plant.

Bonderite CC Range:
•Replacement for Iron phosphate cleaner / coater products.
•Process proven in the field for over 2 years.
•Typically 3-4 stage process with only the first cleaner stage heated.
•Can be used in multi-metal applications treating steel, zinc and aluminium substrates.
•Dip or spray application.
•Simple waste treatment, (no proscribed heavy metals, 40-100 times less phosphorus present than with iron phosphate.
•70% less sludge, therefore much less maintenance.
•Large process cost savings.

Bonderite 1455:
•High performance polymer based conversion coating.
•Typically 4-5 stage process with only the first cleaner stage heated, final stage light rinse with DI water preferred or can have no rinse after treatment.
•Can be used in multi-metal applications treating steel, zinc and aluminium substrates.
•Dip or spray processes or can be applied manually by spray, wipe or roller on large structures.
•No proscribed heavy metals, simple waste treatment.

•Replacement for tricationic zinc phosphate under electrodeposited paint.
•Meets automotive OEM specifications.
